Open mic competition
We hold a competition during the Festival in which any singer/group/performer can take part. The winner will play a very short slot at the end of the Festival in Marquee 2 and then a mainstream slot at the Festival the following year.
Last year’s winner was Fay Brotherhood, a wildlife conservation student who say a traditional song Captain Ward and her own composition All there Can Be both from her debut album Follow the Falcon.
The competition is held on the Barleycorn Bar Marquee stage and you can sign up for a slot in the marquee. You are advised to sign up early as the slots go quickly and there are approx 29 to fill at 10mins each. There are normally 4 sessions:
Saturday 12.45 to 14.45 and 17.00 to 19.00 and
Sunday: 10.30 to 12.30 and 15.00 to 16.15 but these will be confirmed nearer the time when the rest of the programme is confirmed.
The winner of the 2010 Festival was duo – The Raven.
The Raven are Carolyn Forbes on vocals and flute, and Stephen Moncrieff on vocals and guitar. They play a range of traditional and contemporary folk music and original material following the folk tradition, using vocal, guitar and flute to interpret traditional ballads, folk song and shanties. They have supported the likes of Eliza Carthy, Spiers and Boden and Steve Tilston. You can often spot them in one of London’s folk clubs.
